Capna Hosts Inaugural Distinguished Associates Meeting
Las Vegas-Over 45 members of CAPNA attended the first ever ’Distinguished Associates’ Meeting in Las Vegas , Nevada from December 8th through the 11th, 2010, at the Mandarin Oriental in Las Vegas.
The primary theme of the meeting was leadership, with a focus on ‘Developing the Future Leaders of CAPNA’. In attendance were 31 Veterinary Associates, currently serving as Medical Directors and Chiefs of Staff in 17 CAPNA practices located throughout the country.
Co-chairs of the event, Dr. Tom Gus and Dr. Frank Puccio, viewed the meeting as an important step in achieving one of CAPNA’s primary visions- to provide professional leadership training and development for CAPNA Veterinarians.
’CAPNA is dedicated to pursuing excellence in practice. This requires developing our collective staffs, with an emphasis on recognizing and mentoring future leaders’, commented Dr. Tom Gus, Legacy Owner of University Veterinary Hospital.
‘This first meeting provided us with a great opportunity to meet one another for the first time. We shared many ideas-the energy was great among the group’.
Dr. Frank Puccio, Legacy practice Owner of Flannery Hospital expressed excitement about the great opportunities for Veterinary Associates within CAPNA.
’As CAPNA grows and expands so will the partnership/ownership opportunities for those Associates that wish to invest their time and energy in CAPNA’. ‘We have such a great pool of talent among our Associates and it is our vision to encourage a much higher level of engagement by this group’.
Owen McCafferty, CPA, CFO of CAPNA began the first day session educating attendees on the CAPNA organizational structure. Other topics presented included an economic forecast and the opportunities for CAPNA’s future growth within the profession. Mr. McCafferty also presented results of the DISC analysis for the group in an engaging and interactive session. CAPNA President, Dr. Dennis Law presented an overview of the formation of CAPNA and shared the corporate mission and vision statement.
Pfizer Animal Health was a generous sponsor of the CAPNA event. Mr. Jay McNaught, the Senior Manager of Leadership Education and Development at Pfizer Animal Health presented leadership topics for the group. Mr. McNaught presented a ‘Leadership Workshop Designed for the Veterinary Profession’ and a special session on ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ over two and one half days of interactive lectures.
Veterinary Associates in attendance commented about the energy of this first meeting, ‘I have thought from the beginning that CAPNA was a very exciting idea. But after meeting the people from other practices I discovered that CAPNA is made up of really talented people. I look forward to sharing ideas and best practices’, says Dr. Peggy Keng, Medical Director of Irvine Veterinary Services, University Park.

CAPNA member Neal Beeber was recently published in the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine for his advancements in surgical management of tumors in ferrets.
